Scope note
Steel, containing carbon, manganese, and small amounts of other elements, characterized by high strength and corrosion resistance. Exposure to air creates a pebbly, rusty-looking surface that works to reduce corrosion; this surface film turns a deep purple-brown after a number of years which is why high-strength low-alloy steel is sometimes used for exposed structural members of buildings.
